FLV Special Schools Programs

Special Schools Programs

People with disabilities may have complex and multifaceted needs in the area of sexuality education. Children with special learning needs refers to children with learning difficulties, a behaviour disorder and/or a disability. The term disability includes children with an intellectual disability, physical disability, vision impairment, hearing impairment, language disorder, mental health conditions or autism.

Ideally FLV programs should be used strategically within a school's existing curriculum and build upon existing programs and activity's.

'Sexuality for Every Body'-

The principle of teaching sex education to special needs students are the same for all students.

This program has been developed in response to the need expressed by educators and workers in the disability field for a teaching/learning resource addressing the sexuality issues of people with a disability.

The Program:

  • Promotes values that reflect social justice principles.
  • Delivers positive messages about sexual activity.
  • Respects that students with special needs are not a homogeneous group and come from a range of social, economic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Acknowledges that many people with intellectual disabilities have experienced or continue to experience sexual abuse.
  • Meets individual learning and communication needs.

The content of each program therefore varies dependent on the group and is negotiable with our Education and Training Manager.
