Secondary Programs Years 7 to 10

Units of work are developed in consultation with the school.  The in-built flexibility of the program ensures that the content is relevant and appropriate for the needs and abilities of each group. 

Topics include:

I AM CHANGING ….. BUT I’M NOT ALONE

This session highlights:

  • The physical and emotional changes of puberty
  • Reproductive vocabulary
  • Mood swings,
  • Coping with feelings,
  • Broader understanding of the male and female reproductive systems.
  • Personal responsibility,
  • Self image.
  • Bullying and harassment
SEXUAL HEALTH

This session explores a range of issues within a decision making context. Some of these are:

  • Developing positive relationships
  • Contraception,
  • Unplanned pregnancy and
  • STI’s.
CHOOSING, REFLECTING & ACTING

This session engages students in discussion on:

  • Values effecting the decisions we make.
  • Consequences and responsibility taken for their actions.
  • The decision making process.
  • Identifying factors and influences that will result in better decisions.
  • A step-by-step problem-solving process.
FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS

This session engages students in activities that will highlight:

  • How their relationships will change as they mature.
  • Factors that can make communication within a family more effective.
  • Other ways in which relationships can improve.
RELATING WITH OTHERS

This session explores:

  • The notion of friendships and what makes them effective.
  • Some of the drivers that facilitate friendships.
  • Some which can harm friendships.
  • How friendships can change as people grow older.
STI’S (Including HIV/AIDS)

This session aims to

  • Assist students to make good decisions and positive choices for their sexual health.
  • Provide students with current information about Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI’s) and their prevention.
  • Discuss and evaluate agencies and resources that are available for information, testing, treatment, counselling and support.
  • Discuss in what circumstances these agencies would be used.
CONTRACEPTION

This session will engage students in discussions on:

  • Sexual intercourse and contraception and clarify any misconceptions.
  • Current contraceptive methods.
  • Information about agencies and resources.
